On-Line Backups

This is the latest buzz-word in the industry today. It is one of the more secure methods and negates having to take the backups off-site.

What this means is that during the evening, an Internet connection is made to various suppliers and your backup is copied directly to their servers, all automated! This takes the daily hassle of administering backups out of the equation.

However, again it is critical that the backup job is CHECKED first thing in the morning to see if the job was successful. This then allows that if there is a problem, it can be resolved during the day to ensure the next evening’s backup does go through!

Advantages:

· Unattended.

· Software is supplied and set up by the provider.

· Any size capacity

· Secure

· Backups are automatically stored off-site

· Minimal administration on your side

· Only daily checking is required

· Hassle-Free

Disadvantages:

· Can be costly.

· From an Internet connection point of view

· From a supplier point of view - amount of data being backed up (approx R250/Gb)

· Ideally it needs a permanent Internet connection

Backup Tips:

· Do Regular Backups!

· Use Reliable Backup media!

· Rotate your backup media if using tapes!

· Test your Backups at regular intervals!

· Keep your Backups Off-Site!

· Do not use “compression”!

· Once “compression” has to be used to backup ALL your data, it is time to get a larger capacity device!

· This gives you a “grace” period to find the budget to purchase the larger device before your capacity is reached.

· ALWAYS “overwrite” data!

· Implement a Disaster Recovery Plan!
