Disk Backup
Fixed and removable disk backup is fast becoming the IT Manager’s choice. It has all the budget advantages, is fast in both backing up and restore / retrieval of data.
Fixed disk backup is really just an alternative hard drive located preferably on another machine/office/ connected via the local / wide area network.
Removable disk is as the name implies, a disk that can be removed simply and stored in an off site location. Software is required and the same software that tape drives use, can be used for this method.
Again, it is critical to CHECK you daily backups first thing in the morning. This gives you time to resolve any problems before the next scheduled backup takes place.
Advantages:
· Unattended.
· Simple software set up.
· Large capacity
· entry level for removable drive is 160Gb, largest available is 250Gb.
· Entry level for fixed drive is 200Gb, largest available is 500Gb.
· Cost effective.
· Upgrade path simple - purchase extra / bigger hard drive.
Disadvantages:
· Bulky storage device.
· Physical set up cumbersome - two sets of cables to connect every time, one power and one data.
Backup Tips:
· Do Regular Backups!
· Use Reliable Backup media!
· Rotate your backup media if using tapes!
· Test your Backups at regular intervals!
· Keep your Backups Off-Site!
· Do not use “compression”!
· Once “compression” has to be used to backup ALL your data, it is time to get a larger capacity device!
· This gives you a “grace” period to find the budget to purchase the larger device before your capacity is reached.
· ALWAYS “overwrite” data!
· Implement a Disaster Recovery Plan!
