CD / DVD Backup

This is a viable alternative to the tape drives, especially in the SME environment. You require a CD / DVD Writer and the disks MUST be “re-writable” (RW). Software is required and comes with the CD / DVD Writer.

Tip: Use Nero Express; it is much more user-friendly! Be wary of “burning” the data too fast, use a slow speed i.e. 8-24 kb per second; it is far safer and you will be able to read your CD from almost any CD ROM.

Most importantly, CHECK your daily backup first thing in the morning. You then have the rest of the day to sort out any issue before the next backup takes place.

Advantages:

· Robust.

· Reliable.

· Reasonably fast to complete “burn” process.

· Small and compact storage media.

· Very much cheaper than tape drives.

Disadvantages:

· Limited capacity

· 640Mb for CD

· 4Gb for DVD

· “Burn” speed critical.

Backup Tips:

· Do Regular Backups!

· Use Reliable Backup media!

· Rotate your backup media if using tapes!

· Test your Backups at regular intervals!

· Keep your Backups Off-Site!

· Do not use “compression”!

· Once “compression” has to be used to backup ALL your data, it is time to get a larger capacity device!

· This gives you a “grace” period to find the budget to purchase the larger device before your capacity is reached.

· ALWAYS “overwrite” data!

· Implement a Disaster Recovery Plan!
